Chapter Twenty-Five
Quinton woke just before noon. Rested, he pulled out his phone and called Jordan. She answered on the second ring. "Good morning, beautiful. Tell me you didn't get any sleep last night because you were thinking of me."
"I didn't get any sleep last night because I was thinking of you," she deadpanned.
He laughed and placed his hand beneath his head while staring at the ceiling. "Glad to hear it. How's your day going so far?"
"Interesting. Thomas is trying to put a meeting together on the sly, but I don't think it's working."
Quinton frowned. "What? I don't get it."
She explained the Sunday get-together support groups and how they help each other. He hadn't known about that and thought it was a good idea.
"Why don't you want this to work today?" He didn't understand that part.
"Because he's trying to get out of going to Mabel's for dinner. She's our neighbor and a superb cook. I accepted her invitation for both of us and he's trying to get out of it. But not this time. He's going," she said in a determined whisper.
Quinton wondered what that meant for them spending time together today, something he wanted to happen. "Why doesn't he want to go? Must have a reason."
"He thinks she's crazy. She's not," she said quickly in defense of the woman. "That one time she was off her meds and... well, she's nice, lonely and wants a man."
Quinton laughed.
Jordan laughed as well. "That didn't come out right. But she has questions I can't answer. Daddy can help her if he'd get over himself." She spoke the end in a loud voice.
"He's listening?" Quinton guessed.
"Probably," she sounded aggravated.
This wasn't the best time for them to talk. He played with the idea of signing off, but decided to let her call the shots.
"How'd it go last night?" she asked.
"What?"
"After I left, did Sandra talk to you?"
Again, he had forgotten about Sandra. "Yes." He gave her an edited version of the conversation. When she didn't respond, he asked. "Are we okay?" He had never been one to look back after deciding on a woman because he was an all-out or in kind of guy. While he and Sandra were sexually involved, he didn't date anyone else. It made life simpler, and she met his needs. That door was closed whether he and Jordan hooked up.
"Yes. Have you dated other black women?"
"Yeah." Exclusively for the past 11 years.
"I've never dated outside my race. Did you have problems? Additional problems because of the interracial element?"
Because she was sincere, he took a moment to reflect on previous relationships. "Mama Ree's dad was mixed Spanish and Indian, I think. Her mother looked Italian with long straight hair, dark eyes. Mama Ree looks white, although she claims to be Black, Creole, Spanish, Italian, anything other than white. Being raised by a Spanish grandmother and adopted by a Black Creole mom, my perspective is different. I have a deep appreciation and affection for strong women of color." He paused. "Mama Ree claims me as her son to everybody and keeps it moving, always has.
